10 Signs Your Body is Crying for Water
1. You feel thirsty
Yes, this one sounds like a no-brainer. However, if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Thirst is an automatic defense mechanism that alerts your body that your fluids are out of balance. Whenever your thirst instinct is triggered, that means you are already out of balance and need to hydrate.
2. You are feeling tired
Fluid loss in your body can lead to periods of fatigue and low energy as your body tries to operate with less fluid than it needs to function. If you feel tired and flat even though you’ve had a good night’s sleep, increasing your water intake can help you out of that funk.
3. You’re getting headaches
Dehydration can lower blood flow and oxygen to the brain and then cause inflammation that can give you a pounding headache. If you are experiencing a headache, try drinking water before reaching for the painkillers to see if that relieves the discomfort.
4. You have a cold
If you have good digestion and smooth, regular bowel movements, you have water to thank. Excessive fluid loss due to diarrhea or vomiting can also harden the stool and lead to constipation. Lack of water in the body can even cause heartburn and indigestion.
5. It is taking longer to get healthy
Your body is like a machine, and it continuously filters certain waste products. However, if you don’t give it enough water for the flushing system, it won’t work as it was designed, causing those toxins to hang around longer than they should.
6. Sudden Food Cravings
When dehydrated, your body sends false signals to your brain that you are hungry, when in reality you are thirsty.
7. Reduced Urination and Color Change
On average, you should head to the bathroom 4-10 times a day if you are hydrating enough. Clear or light colored pee shows a very hydrated body, while golden pee shows concentrated pee and is usually a sign that your body needs water.
8. Scaly, Dry Skin and Lips
As the largest organ in the body, your skin also needs to be hydrated with drinking water. Hydrated skin cells give your skin a brighter, more vibrant appearance. Without enough water, your skin can become dry and flaky and can develop fine lines and sagging skin.
9. ‘Brain Fog’ or Poor Concentration
Since the human brain is made up of approximately 90 percent water, it definitely shows signs when dehydrated. Lack of water in the brain can affect your decision making, memory and mood.
Dehydration can even cause symptoms of brain fog, such as forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating, thinking and communicating.
10. You are experiencing joint pain
Cartilage is made up of about 80% water. This water keeps bones from grinding together and helps absorb the shock of walking, jumping, and running. When you are dehydrated, your joints also become dehydrated and the shock of everyday life begins to take a toll.
