Cher recently opened up about her preference for dating younger men, attributing it to the fact that most men her age have either passed away or been too intimidated to approach her. The 77-year-old pop icon, known for her fondness for younger men, is currently dating 38-year-old record executive Alexander ‘AE’ Edwards.
During her appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show this week, Cher quipped that she prefers younger men because “all of the men in my own age group have died.” The multi-talented star also explained that older men were often intimidated by her, while younger men, “who were raised by women like me,” weren’t afraid to approach her.
“And the reason I got with young men is because men my age or older—well, now they’re all dead,” she joked. “But before, they were always terrified to approach me.”
Cher has had a reputation for dating younger men throughout her career, starting with Rob Camilletti, who became known as the ‘Bagel Boy.’ In 1986, when she was 40 and he was 22, they started dating. He was her date at the Oscars when she won Best Actress for Moonstruck in 1988.
She and Alexander first met at Paris Fashion Week in September 2022, and by November, she had confirmed their romance. Despite facing criticism for their 39-year age difference, Cher remained unfazed, replying to her social media trolls, “LOVE DOESNT KNOW MATH, IT SEES [hearts].”
Shortly after confirming her relationship with Alexander, she appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and poked fun at herself for dating a much younger man. “Well, on paper, it’s kind of ridiculous,” she admitted. “But in real life, we get along great. He’s fabulous, and I don’t give men qualities that they don’t deserve.”
Cher revealed that she felt older men were often put off by her strong personality, saying, “If I hadn’t met younger men in my life, I would have never had a date because older men just didn’t like me all that much, do you know what I mean?”
She noted that her younger boyfriends “were raised by women like me,” and therefore weren’t intimidated by her humor and eccentricity.
The relationship with Alexander hit a rough patch in May 2023, leading to a brief breakup, but the couple rekindled their romance by September and have been together ever since.
Reflecting on her past relationships, Cher shot to fame in the 1960s alongside her mentor and first husband Sonny Bono, whom she met when he was 28 and she was just 16. By the mid-1970s, their marriage had ended in a bitter divorce.
Cher emphasized that she won’t change her personality for anyone. “Younger men don’t care if you’re funny or outrageous and wanna do stupid things, and you have a strong personality,” she told Kelly Clarkson. “I’m not giving up my personality for anybody, okay?”
Her relationship with Alexander Edwards remains strong, and the two continue to navigate life together despite their age difference.
