My 7-month-pregnant wife and I waited patiently in a long line at the grocery store, surrounded by hustling people with carts full of groceries. We chatted gently, attempting to pass the time while waiting our turn.
Finally, it was our turn at the cashier. I was unloading our purchases onto the conveyor belt when a huge man pushed his way into our space, forcing my wife to stumble. “Move aside, I’m in a hurry!” he said loudly, his voice reverberating throughout the store.
I felt a flash of wrath within me. I clenched my hands and prepared to confront him, but my wife quietly grabbed my arm. “Don’t bother,” she whispered gently, her eyes flickering with a hint of amusement and something else I couldn’t quite understand. “Just wait and watch.”
Curious but doubtful, I stood back and watched as the rude man paid for his stuff and hurried towards the exit.
Two security guards approached him unexpectedly, seizing his arms and pushing him aside. He protested and struggled, but they held him firm. I glanced at my wife, stunned. “How did you know?”
She smiled with a glint in her eyes. “I noticed he had been stuffing items into his jacket while we were in line,” she told me. “When he pushed me, I got a closer look and saw he was trying to steal some expensive electronics.”
My jaw fell. I could not believe it. “You saw all that?”
She nodded. “Sometimes, it pays to keep your cool and pay attention to the details.”
As we completed checking out and headed to the car, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride for my wife. Not only had she handled the matter gracefully, but she had also outwitted the burglar without making a disturbance.
In that moment, I understood how fortunate I was to have such a keen and insightful spouse by my side. And as we drove home, I realized I’d never underestimate her sense again.
