Fans who were hoping to see him after June 2025 are out of luck, however. Mathisen’s team discloses that all shows scheduled after June 2025 have been officially canceled.
“As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. So, it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts.” his team announced.
Johnny Mathis was born on September 30, 1935, in Gilmer, Texas, and raised in San Francisco, California. He became famous for his smooth, romantic ballads and became one of the most outstanding and beloved musicians in America. Mathis learned to play classical music as a child and began singing professionally at the age of 13.
Mathis grew up in San Francisco and met famous jazz musicians who played in the city. He found deep passion in the famous Duke Ellington.
Because of his intellect, Ellington was one of my heroes.
Inden 1990 fortalte Mathis: “He was a stylish man, sophisticated without being pompous or arrogant, and his music absolutely sounded like he looked.”
Mathis built his place in pop music history in 1957 with the smash hits Chances Are and It’s Not for Me to Say. His album Johnny’s Greatest Hits was published that same year and broke records by staying atop the Billboard charts for an impressive 490 weeks at a time. From there, Mathis’ career started to develop quickly.
His musical contributions have been enormous, with over 70 albums and over 350 million albums sold worldwide. His classics, such as Wonderful! Wonderful!, The Twelfth of Never, and the festive holiday albums, have become coupled with romance and nostalgia. He was nicknamed “The Voice of Romance” for his gentle and soothing voice.
Johnny Mathis has had an incredible career that has not only been commercially successful, but he has also reaped the right awards.
In 2003, he achieved a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.
It’s an emotional moment when Mathis departs from the stage, but his influence on music will live on.
