If You Ever Feel These 4 Heart Attack Symptoms, Dial 911! Do Not Wait!

Despite what you may believe, heart attacks don’t always come with the painful and scary signs you’ve been made to believe they happen. Sometimes a person may not feel the sharp, searing pain that causes them to clutch their chest and collapse in extreme pain.

The heart usually warns people of a potential heart attack minutes, days, or even weeks before the event.

1. Swelling

Heart failure can also cause fluid to build up in the body. This can cause swelling in the legs or abdomen, as well as in the feet and ankles. Some people start retaining so much fluid that they find they suddenly gain weight (sometimes as much as 10 pounds!). When this happens, many people also lose their appetite.

2. Anxiety

They had feelings of impending doom or anxiety attacks shortly before their heart attacks occurred. Although many people with anxiety attacks believe they are having a heart attack, it is better to be safe than sorry. Call 911.

3. Pain in other parts of the body

Pain starts in the chest, and then extends to the shoulders, arms, elbows, neck, jaw, back, and even the abdomen. However, sometimes there is no pain in the chest – only pain in some of these other parts of the body. Pain between the shoulder blades or pain in one or both arms is especially common. This pain can come and go, so don’t be fooled.

4. Coughing

Some people who are having heart failure cough up bloody phlegm, but others simply have an irritating or wheezing cough that is sometimes a symptom of heart failure. This is the result of fluid accumulation in the lungs. It is especially important to pay attention to this symptom if you are having any of the other symptoms listed here as well.

Above are some of the hidden signs that people most likely do not correlate with a heart attack; below are some of the more common or traditional signs of which you should also be aware.

  • Chest Tightness

Feeling pressure in your chest can be a sign of a heart attack – and it doesn’t necessarily have to be very painful to be serious (so don’t ignore it!).

  • Trouble Breathing

Feeling out of breath when doing daily activities, especially if you haven’t experienced this before, can be a sign of a potentially serious heart problem. Common and treatable heart problems, such as coronary heart disease (the cause of heart attacks), heart failure, and abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, can cause shortness of breath.”

  • Nausea

If you have constant nausea and indigestion, talk to your healthcare provider. The best way to be sure if what you are experiencing is critical is to seek urgent help. Medical tests can diagnose the cause of your symptoms, and if it’s a heart attack, the sooner you get help, the better.

Don’t try to stiffen your symptoms or ignore them, hoping they will go away. If your symptoms last longer than five or 10 minutes, call 911 or have someone take you to the emergency room at your local hospital. You can also chew and swallow an aspirin, unless you are allergic to them.
