Harry was surprised when medical testing proved that the twin boys he had raised as sons were not his. Furious, he returned home to face his wife, only to discover a revelation that would ᴅᴇsᴛʀᴏʏ their family forever.
Harry grinned as he watched his sons laugh at something in the pediatrician’s office. “Dr. Dennison,” Harry stood up anxiously as the doctor entered.
“Mr. Campbell. Please have a seat,” said the doctor, shaking Harry’s hand and sitting across from him. “I actually wanted to talk to you in private, Mr. Campbell. The boys can wait outside.”
Harry’s heart raced, wondering if the news was awful. Even though his boys were twins, Josh had significant anemia, so Dr. Dennison recommended additional tests and urged Harry to get a blood test in case a transfusion was required. Fortunately, his other son, Andrew, was completely healthy.
“So, do we have a final clarity on how to proceed?” As the boys went, Harry queried the doctor, agitated.
“Calm down, Mr. Campbell,” Dr. Dennison slumped back into his chair. “Right now, my primary concern isn’t Josh. Yes, he has an iron deficiency, but we’ll start with supplements, possibly intravenously. I wanted to talk to you about something else.”
Harry gave a sigh of relief. His son’s condition was not severe.
“Did you adopt the boys, Mr. Campbell?” the doctor inquired, sending shivers down Harry’s spine. “This is a little sensitive, but your blood type is incompatible with the boys.”
“Well, that isn’t very strange, right? I mean, in a lot of cases, biological parents can’t donate to their kids because they are a mix of two people,” Harry argued.
“Yes, sir. Some biological parents can’t donate,” the doctor agreed. “But what I mean is that you can’t be the boys’ father. Blood type isn’t the ultimate factor in determining paternity, but both your twins’ blood types are A. You and your wife are both B.”
“What…But this is impossible,” Harry mumbled beneath his breath.
“I’m sorry, sir. I saw these results a couple of days ago, so I took the liberty of running a DNA test on your samples too. I understand this is hard to hear, but there’s more,” said the doctor, pushing a couple of documents toward Harry.
Harry looked at the doctor in surprise as he gathered papers to peruse. There were many medical phrases he didn’t understand, but the words “half-siblings” in the records sprang out at him.
Harry gazed up at Dr. Dennison, stunned. “That’s right, Mr. Campbell. Andrew and Josh and technically your half-siblings, not your sons.”
Harry could not believe it. The children he had reared for twelve years were not his. In reality, they had to be his father’s, implying Nancy had been with him. But it made no sense. She was already pregnant when he presented her to his parents.
Harry took longer to get out of the car after they arrived home. Suddenly, he heard his boys screaming, “Grandpa!” “We missed you!”
Harry clenched his fists hard, his eyes blazing. However, he couldn’t storm into the house and confront his father and wife because Josh and Andrew would be present. So he feigned a smile as he entered.
“What are you doing here, Dad?” he asked tightly.
However, he did not even wait for his father to react. Harry’s blood was boiling from the wrath he had kept under control all the way from the doctor’s office. “Boys, weren’t you going to Bobby’s house for a game night?” He forced a smile as he turned to face the boys.
“Right, Daddy! Andrew, let’s go!” As the boys got their controllers and exited the home, Harry lost his calm.
“Did you sleep with my father, Nancy?” He exploded at his wife.
Nancy’s face turned pale.
“Son, look, it’s not what you think,” his father, Robert, interjected. But Harry wasn’t listening to him.
“DNA doesn’t lie, Nancy!” He glared at his wife. “I want to know the truth!”
Nancy could not look her spouse in the eyes. “Harry has every right to be angry,” she assured herself as he reflected on that terrible night 13 years ago…
Nancy was enjoying the beat of the music as she strolled through the dance floor to the bar area. While waiting for her drinks, she caught a whiff of costly male scent.
Nancy looked to her left and saw a man with gray hair and a sharp jawline staring at her. “Can I buy you a drink?” he boldly inquired, and Nancy was flattered by the attention. The man was twice her age, yet he was really beautiful.
“I’m already getting something for my girlfriends!” she nearly yelled at him across the loud music.
”Oh, you’re on a girls’ trip with your friends?” the man asked, smiling charmingly as he approached her.
Nancy didn’t notice when the bartender served her shots. “I’m Nancy.”
“Robert”
The next thing they knew, they were мαкιиg συт the elevator, and Nacy awoke the next morning in his bed. They had breakfast and chatted for a while before Robert announced that he had to depart.
Nancy knew she’d never see him again, but that was okay. Her trip to Las Vegas had been exciting and intense, just what she had hoped for. Three weeks later, Nancy discovered she was pregnant and regretted the 𝔬𝔫𝔢-𝔫𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱 𝔢𝔫𝔠𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔯.
Nancy did not want to end the pregnancy because she feared she would be unable to conceive later. So she left the gynecologist’s office, unsure where to go or what to do. But she desperately needed to speak with someone. So feeling lost and heartbroken, Nancy confided in her friend, Anna.
“Don’t tell me you’re having this baby alone! I mean, c’mon, is there no way you can get in touch with that Vegas guy?”
“Nope,” Nancy sighed.
“Hey, ladies!” A male voice interrupted their serious discourse just then. “I’m Oliver, and this is my friend, Harry. We saw you two being overly serious here, and we thought we should come over and cheer you guys up.”
Nancy was too gracious to push the lads away, and Anna realized Oliver was quite attractive. She went to the dance floor with him, leaving Harry and Nancy to converse for hours.
“Hey, Nancy, let’s go to the lady’s room,” she said abruptly, interrupting their talk. Nancy excused herself and joined Anna. “Sleep with him. He seems nice. Las Vegas was only three weeks ago. He will never know,” she said her in the restroom.
Initially, Nancy refused. She would not commit something so heinous. She had a job and a degree; she could become a single mother. But the idea of her child having a father altered Nancy’s mind, and she ended up sleeping with Harry that night.
A few months later, Harry got down on one knee and uttered the three magic words. Nancy agreed very instantly, and they kissed. Everything was perfect.
“They’re going to love you,” Harry told her while they stood on his parents’ front porch a few days later. He was finally introducing her to his parents.
“Oh, God. They’re going to be mad,” she said, rubbing her belly, but Harry insisted it would be fine.
The door opened to a booming voice, and Harry’s mother, Miriam, embraced him with outstretched arms. Nancy got into problems after smelling an intoxicating scent that got her in trouble.
“Dad, this is my fiancée,” Harry said as he stepped back from his father, revealing Robert. “But, as you can see, there’s another surprise in store,” Harry said, bringing Nancy to his side as they entered the home. “We’re having twins!”
Miriam, Harry’s mother, was the picture of happiness, embracing Nancy closely into her embrace and paying close attention to her belly.
“She should see your baby pictures, Harry!” Miriam said. She and Harry eventually departed to get the baby album, leaving Nancy and Robert alone.
“Nancy is it—” Robert began, but she stopped him short.
“They’re Harry’s. I had no idea he was your son. But these babies are his. Let’s do what they say, ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.'”
Robert and Nancy resolved to keep the σnє-níght stαnd a secret between them.
Present-day…
“Tell me, Dad!” Harry exploded. “How is it that our pediatrician of several years had to tell MY SONS are my SIBLINGS? How did it happen?”
“It happened in Vegas,” Robert sighed, defected.
“Vegas…” Harry whispered. “The trip you took with Anna and your friends a few weeks before you met me, and we slept together?”
Nancy could only nod.
“Did you know you were pregnant already?” he asked angrily.
“Yes,” she hung her head.
“You baby-trapped me, but not even with my own babies!” Harry shouted.
“Son, I’m sorry,” Robert interjected. “Although, in my defense, she told me they were yours.”
“You’re a ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀ!” Nancy yelled at him. “You knew! You can’t put the entire blame on me!”
They began bickering, and Harry had a flashback to past occasions when they weren’t as angry. He reflected on his own boys. who had brown eyes like his father, despite the fact that Harry and Nancy both had blue eyes. He hadn’t questioned it earlier, but he should have.
“They’ll never know you’re their real father!” Nancy shrieked at Robert, and Harry stroked his neck, thinking deeply.
“Grandpa is our father?” Josh asked. They all turned in terror toward the doorway, where the twins and their friend, Bobby, stood.
“Dad?” Andrew turned to face Harry, who attempted to grin but couldn’t. The poker face he had kept after the appointment with Dr. Dennison wouldn’t come off, and his sons could see the truth in his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled to the twins, exhausted.
