A startling video of a tricycle driver with a serious head lice infestation has gone viral on social media, raising concerns among netizens.
The now-deleted video, posted by Facebook user Primo Onipa, is intended to raise awareness about the hazards of untreated lice infestations.
Onipa additionally reminded other drivers to practice excellent hygiene as they interact with a large number of commuters every day.
The video shows lice spreading across the back of the driver’s neck and onto his shirt, demonstrating an acute ɪɴғᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴ.
Dr. Jay Recasata of Faces and Curves noted that such circumstances might be quite uncomfortable. “Head lice ɪɴғᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴ is contagious. It thrives in the roots of our hair, proliferates fast, and sucks out blood in the head. When this happens, it may produce wounds on the scalp and can eventually lead to a bacterial ɪɴғᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ,” he told the Filipino Times.
Dr. Recasata also stated that therapy is straightforward, requiring only a specific shampoo that costs roughly P500 per bottle.
However, untreated lice ɪɴғᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴs can worsen. Dr. Enrique Collantes of Derma Clinic war:ned that severe instances may result in anemia and malnutrition as the lice feed on the host’s blood.
According to the National Health Service, head lice spread through direct contact with an infected individual or the sharing of personal goods such as combs, brushes, and caps. Lice can also remain for brief periods of time on upholstered furniture, beds, and towels, spreading the dise:ase even further.
To prevent lice, wash clothes and bedding in hot water, vacuum floors, and soak hair brushes in hot water for five to ten minutes. These preventive practices can contribute to a lice-free home.
Maintaining good hygiene is especially important for those who regularly interact with a large number of people, such as drivers and commuters.
