The Couple With Two Boys Who Wanted To Try For A Girl Welcome Quintuplets
Megan Hulen, from Minot, North Dakota, and her husband Joshua have 2 boys Jacob, 7, and Matthew, 2, when they decided to try for another baby in the hope of having a girl.
Megan has polycystic ovary syndrome, which means she doesn’t ovulate naturally, and had previously relied on fertility drugs and IUI when she conceived.
So the couple were surprised to learn that she had conceived the spots through natural ovulation.
Speaking to Fabulous Digital, she said, “We had decided to try again for a daughter and I got pregnant before we even had a chance to start IUI.
“But then we found out we were going to have five babies and nothing could have prepared us for that.”
The couple went for an ultrasound at six weeks, where they were initially told only one heartbeat was present and it was unlikely all five would be viable. Then They went back a week later and saw five heartbeats.
“After the ultrasound, I told my husband I couldn’t go home because I needed time away from the children, so we went to his office and I sat in the corner and cried for about an hour.”
But while the news came as a shock to Megan, she says a previous pregnancy had taught her to remain calm.
Emotions aside, Megan discovered there was a big difference between carrying one baby and carrying five.
But while the pregnancy was a slow period, Megan was baffled by how quick and easy the birth was.
She was admitted to Fargo Hospital in Sanford at 32 weeks after doctors noticed a rise in blood pressure, and the couple welcomed the quintuplets via C-section on September 2.
In their birth order, Allison weighed 3 pounds 5.6 ounces; Adam weighed 4 pounds 0.2 ounces; Madison weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces; Emma weighed 3 pounds 10.9 ounces; and Chloe weighed 3 pounds 3.5 ounces.
Within three days of giving birth, Megan was discharged despite doctors previously warning that she may require a blood transfusion due to multiple birth complications.
After a week and a half She was up to the point where She could stop taking pain medication, I can’t complain about recovery.
And the babies themselves were born without complications, but at 32 weeks they were premature and kept in the NICU for only three weeks.
The couple are now settling into home life with their doubts, admitting it has been something of a learning process.
