He Became the First Man in History to Give Birth — His Life Changed Drastically Afterward

When he was 10 years old, Beatie began to identify himself as a man and he went public in 1997. In March 2002, he had sex reassignment surgery.

He became pregnant by artificial insemination in 2007 because his wife at the time, Nancy, was infertile.
Beatie made history in 2008 when he became the first man to get pregnant and give birth, and since then he has had two more children. His life changed dramatically after going public with his pregnancy in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Since then, he has continued to write personal essays and books documenting his pregnancy experiences, and many TV specials and even movies have been made to highlight this topic.

Unfortunately, Beatie has faced incessant media attention and misunderstanding from strangers as more and more people learn about his past and continue to call him a pregnant man. .

After having her first child, Susan, in 2008, Beatie went on to have two more children with then-wife Nancy Beatie. The couple separated in 2012 and in 2016, Beatie married his second wife, Amber Beatie, nee Nicholas, who worked at the nursery he attended. They had a child together in 2018, whom Amber gave birth to.

Today, Beatie and his family live a relatively quiet life in Phoenix, although Beatie occasionally takes on public speaking jobs or small roles (you may have seen him as a supporting role in a U-Haul commercial). His older children – now 11, 12 and 13 – split their time between his home and their mother’s, about ten miles away. When the whole family is at home, they swim in the pool together, play checkers, or experiment with new recipes.

Despite the backlash, Beatie is proud of his life and his family. “I don’t see anything wrong with being a pregnant man,” Beatie said. “I was so proud to be a dad, and I’m still proud to be a dad. I’m so proud that I was the one to bring my kids into the world. It’s kind of like a badge.”

Currently, Beatie is living a relatively quiet life with her family in Phoenix, Arizona and is on a mission to help educate others about her experience.
